Mix with water until the glaze becomes fluffy. Apply 3 equal layers intersecting each other, apply at least 2 layers. Burn it and apply the third coat to ensure good coverage. Let it dry between every second coat. Leave a 1 inch border from the edges of the shelf. Tired of leftover glass work and pots sticking to oven racks? Oven racks are expensive and hard to replace, so when they become deformed by glass drips, they can reduce productivity. Using oven wash on the racks helps prevent such problems. The use of oven wash extends the shelf life, and accidental glaze drips can be easily removed without damaging. Oven Wash Powder is a pre-made dry powder that can be easily mixed with water just before use. Oven Wash is made of refractory materials (components that can be burned at high temperatures) such as alumina and zirconium. Simply dissolve oven rinsing powder in a small bucket of water until it has a milky consistency (similar to a glaze). Then use a wide brush to apply a thin layer to the rack (the racks should be clean before washing the oven). Here, we often process oven racks as part of our daily productive work, and find that the liquid tends to dry out very quickly. To counter this, we find that if you wipe the oven shelves with a damp sponge right away before applying the oven wash, it really helps with the even application. After the initial coating, allow the oven wash to dry and apply additional coats until they are about 1/16 inch thick, letting each coat dry before applying another coat. If oven wash is applied too thickly, it will peel and crack more easily. During the first application, we recommend applying two coats, burning the rack and then applying a third coat. You don't have to do a special burn just to burn the first two layers; Load up the shelves with cookie work and you'll be good to go! Oven wash often flakes off the shelves easily, causing the chips to fall all over the oven and into the pots. We find that if applied correctly, the furnace can withstand many burns. Once the lye starts to set, you can sand or grind your shelves and apply a new coat. This will greatly extend the life of your shelf and save you money and the hassle of replacing shelves. If the glaze slips off a vase and hangs on an unwashed shelf, you will likely lose both the shelf and the bowl - which is no good! However, with oven-washed shelves, you can still save your bowl and shelf, even when glaze issues arise. The oven wash may stick to the pan and the glaze may stick to the oven wash, but both can be sanded or ground, saving both the bowl and the rack! While kiln wash is a great advantage for ceramic artists, it can also be used as a glass spacer, for those working in glass kilns.
